Adventure Camp Portland - 2nd to 7th - Day Camp

Our Portland Day Camp transports 2nd – 7th graders to local settings for exciting and fulfilling authentic outdoor experiences. Whether campers are brand new to adventure sports or already experienced in the outdoors, our instructors use time-tested techniques to support every ability level and build campers’ confidence. Every day brings a different adventure—mountain biking beautiful trails, balancing on a stand up paddleboard, hiking, paddling in a kayak or climbing a nearby crag.

Beyond developing their individual abilities, campers focus on teamwork, working as a group to navigate their surroundings, paddling in pairs on stand up paddleboards or helping each other transport and set up gear. As their technical know-how grows, so does their ability to communicate and thrive in team environments.

Through thoughtful guidance, campers develop the lasting skills, experience and self-assuredness to launch into a lifetime of empowering outdoor adventure. All activities take place in the beautiful outdoor areas of Portland—places you can return to for a lifetime!

Places We Go: Ozone Climbing Crag

We take campers to natural rock sites where they learn the ins and outs of climbing techniques, equipment, and safety on climbs calibrated to their ability level.

Places We Go: L.L. Stub Stewart State Park

Whether campers are riding for the first time or the hundredth, we get them comfortable with biking technique, safety, equipment, and maintenance. They can bring their own wheels or borrow from our fleet, which has bikes for campers of all sizes.

Places We Go: Forest Park

On stunning trails in local sites, campers get out into nature and back to basics, learning about flora and fauna and Leave No Trace principles as they explore and deepen their understanding of the world around them.

Places We Go: Cedar Oak or Cook Park

Campers build strength and balance on stand up paddleboards, playing games and gaining confidence on the water at local destinations.

Places We Go: Tualatin River

Our kayaking program helps campers grow incrementally more comfortable on the water as they get familiar with their environment and equipment. They learn about water safety and paddling techniques, practicing their new skills in bodies of water nearby.

Shelby Treichler

I love getting to spend my summer outdoors with a community of like-minded people. It wasn’t until quite recently that I learned the absolute joy that is being part of the outdoor community. The sooner we can bring children into the community, teach them how to be responsible stewards and how to adventure safely, the more likely we are to have a future where society is balanced with nature. I have my CPR and Wilderness First Aid cert and am in the process of obtaining my Wilderness First Responder. All my camps growing up were centered around school activities and sports. It wasn’t until my first summer with Avid that I got to experience a camp geared towards outdoor exploration and adventure. I love trying to spark in kids, especially young girls, the confidence and curiosity that I didn’t fully appreciate till later in life. I’ve backpacked and trekked all around the US and spent a month completing the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal. I started rock climbing a couple of years ago and am excited to explore mountaineering more. In my free time, I run a small art/craft business inspired by the outdoors. I’ve had so many amazing mentors teach me about the outdoors and I enjoy the opportunity to pass on the knowledge and passion I’ve received to the kids we teach.

Why Sign Up For Multiple Weeks?

Do you remember that old TV show Blue’s Clues? It was the most successful kids’ show of all time. Do you remember that book that your child insisted on reading over and over again? How could you forget it? Why was Blue’s Clues so successful and why did your child NEED to re-read that book? Because repetition promotes learning, growth, and empowerment.

Based on our experience (and a bunch of brain science), we know that multiple weeks of Avid camp will benefit your child – it will result in greater skill development, increased self-confidence, higher levels of risk assessment/environmental awareness, and an improved ability to connect socially with others.

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.
