Kayaking Camp Wash Park - 2nd to 7th - Day Camp

Our Kayaking Day Camp takes campers out on both flat-water and whitewater, to experience the joy of paddling independently and also as a team. Under the guidance of our highly qualified instructors, campers will learn basic strokes, rescue techniques, river reading, and water safety as they navigate some of the most beautiful lakes and waterways in Colorado’s Front Range.

Campers learn skills tailored to their level, progressing as they build proficiency and comfort. We group them by grade—2nd – 4th graders join the Skills Camp, while 5th – 7th graders make up our Adventure Team—and give them plenty of individualized attention as they develop confidence and deepen their technical skills, stroke by stroke.

Please note: Kayaking Day Camp campers should have some previous experience paddling in standing or moving water. In order to register for this program, campers MUST feel fully comfortable on open water and be comfortable being fully submerged in water for short periods of time. If a camper does not meet this minimum skill requirement, we reserve the right to move a camper to a different program (if space is available) or remove the camper from the group and offer a credit. If you have any questions about whether Kayaking Day Camp is right for your child, please give us a call at (720) 249-2412.

THE WEEK’S ADVENTURES

Flat Water

Whitewater

Places We Go: Chatfield State Park

Campers spend their first two or three days mastering flatwater skills getting comfortable with fitting their equipment, using kayaking hand signals, making wet exits and maneuvering our kid-friendly Jackson Whitewater Kayaks before they ever dip their paddles in moving water.

Places We Go: South Platte, Clear Creek, Boulder Creek

During the second half of the week, campers will leave flat-water behind to build knowledge and skills in moving water, practicing their technique in local rivers such as the South Platte and Clear Creek. Please note that our kayaking locations will depend on water levels and group ability.

MEET YOUR CAMP DIRECTOR

Zach Hykan

I love to work with kids because they bring such high energy and passion for learning new activities and skills. It’s inspiring for me to see kids leap headfirst into a new thing, even when it’s hard or scary. When a kid is truly and fully absorbed with something it’s unlike anything else. To be able to take what I love in the world and try to present it in a way where it gets kids equally excited is one of the great joys of choosing to work with children. My favorite outdoor adventures are climbing, skiing, mountain and road biking, and hiking. A few of my big adventures have been climbing South Six Shooter in Moab, Skiing in Japan, and mountain biking in redwood forests. I’m also hoping to climb every 14er in Colorado before I turn 30. I love working for Avid4 Adventure because I get to see children develop a love for the same outdoor activities that I do. I also get to see my friends and coworkers have a blast hanging out with kids and helping them get stoked about nature.

Why Sign Up For Multiple Weeks?

Do you remember that old TV show Blue’s Clues? It was the most successful kids’ show of all time. Do you remember that book that your child insisted on reading over and over again? How could you forget it? Why was Blues Clue’s so successful and why did your child NEED to re-read that book? Because repetition promotes learning, growth, and empowerment.

Based on our experience (and a bunch of brain science), we know that multiple weeks of Avid camp will benefit your child – it will result in greater skill development, increased self-confidence, higher levels of risk assessment/environmental awareness, and an improved ability to connect socially with others.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.

OUR APPROACH TO SAFETY
