Expedition Rock Climbing Colorado - 9th to 12th Grade - Expedition Camp

Our weeklong expedition is built for campers with climbing experience* excited about advancing their skills in authentic settings where campers will spend their days climbing and their nights camping under the stars.

In a group of no more than 13 campers and up to three experienced staffers, climbers will explore a range of Staunton’s engaging, challenging routes. They’ll break into small climbing teams to get comfortable with their equipment, practice climbing and bouldering techniques and try out different roles within their team. They’ll also build camping skills as they learn the basics of camp cooking and sleeping outdoors.

For one day campers will trade in their climbing shoes for water shoes for a day of working on their teambuilding while enjoying rafting class I-III rapids.

It’s a week of authentic adventure at its best, one that leaves campers with solid skills, lasting friendships and a renewed appreciation for being active outdoors.

Immersed in Colorado’s Staunton State Park, the park’s natural beauty—lush meadows, alpine forests, pristine ponds, soaring cliffs—are the perfect backdrop of empowering outdoor adventures. Campers also take a day away from climbing to raft through Clear Creek Canyon.

* While beginning rock climbers are welcome, participants must have some experience with climbing basics and should be excited to spend 4-6 hours rock climbing each day. Campers will likely be divided up by experience level during climbs.

Teambuilding

Campers will take on a range of rock types, styles and levels of difficulty in stunning natural settings as they explore Staunton’s knobs, domes and cliffs for an exciting 4-6 hours per day. They will get familiar with all climbing equipment and learn new techniques like flagging a big move, smearing a slab, mastering a crack and heel hooking an arête.

Campers will get comfortable with their climbing equipment—carabiners, stoppers, camalots and belay devices—as they learn anchor setup, review traditional gear placement, identify natural anchors, set up new ones and advance their knot knowledge.

During their day of white water rafting, campers will practice paddling through rapids, staying safe on the water and working together with their fellow rafters to navigate their vessel.

Campers will learn to maintain a campsite, setting up and breaking down their equipment, keeping their space tidy and cooking their own meals in the backcountry which fosters independence and valuable skills they will use throughout their lives. They’ll play games during downtime and swap stories around the campfire, building deep, lasting friendships with their fellow expedition-mates.

Throughout the week, campers will practice important interpersonal skills like communication, problem solving and teamwork. Through games during downtime, stories around the campfire and time alone reflecting, they’ll build confidence and comfort within the group and as an individual.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.

OUR APPROACH TO SAFETY
