Survival Skills Camp Highlands Ranch - 2nd to 7th - Day Camp

Our Survival Skills Day Camp introduces campers to the power and practical value of the natural world as they learn to survive and thrive outdoors. Alongside our accomplished instructors, campers spend a full week exploring the Front Range, hiking, canoeing and learning essential survival skills—navigation, animal tracking, tool making, fire safety—to keep them safe and self-reliant in the wilderness.

Campers tackle challenges suited to their age and skill level, advancing as their proficiency and comfort grow. We also group them by grade—2nd – 4th graders in Skills Camp, 5th – 7th graders on our Adventure Team—giving them the individual attention they need to deepen their survival skills and build confidence outdoors.

Survival Skills Day Camp campers don’t need any previous survival or outdoor experience.

THE WEEK’S ADVENTURES

Hiking

Survival Skills

Canoeing

Places We Go: Genesee Park, South Valley, Red Rocks, Deer Creek Canyon

On their hikes, campers learn basic navigation skills, explore the principles of Leave No Trace and learn to observe and identify useful plants as they build awareness, appreciation and respect for the world around them.

Places We Go: Genesee Park, South Valley, Red Rocks, Deer Creek Canyon

We teach campers how to track animals, identify scat, find food and medicine in the wild and fashion utensils and shelter from gathered materials. We also cover the basics of flintknapping, tool making and fire safety, giving campers hands-on practice with hand-drill and bow-drill fire tools.

Places We Go: Chatfield Reservoir

Out on the water campers master the basics of paddling a canoe, getting familiar with water safety and canoeing equipment as they hone their technique. They’ll also learn how to read terrain to lead them to water and purify the water they find.

MEET YOUR CAMP DIRECTOR

Sam Murray

I love working with kids who are excited to explore and learn about the outdoors. Kids keep me feeling young and excited to go to work every day. They are constant sources of energy, fun, and inspiration. I feel incredibly grateful for my family and role models growing up because they helped me learn to appreciate being outdoors and having adventures and I want to support kids making that discovery for themselves. I have avalanche safety training (AIARE Level 1, AIARE Rescue), Avid Lead Climbing Certification and Wilderness First Responder Certification. I grew up going to a sleep-away camp in Maine called Camp Agawam and we still enjoy a strong relationship with many of our friends from our time there. I love feeling connected to landscapes and wildlife. Climbing, biking, hiking all give me opportunities to connect with myself and the landscape in new ways. My favorite place to be outside of the camp season is exploring the mountains on my splitboard with my dog and my girlfriend/adventure partner, Emma.

Why Sign Up For Multiple Weeks?

Do you remember that old TV show Blues Clues? It was the most successful kids’ show of all time. Do you remember that book that your child insisted on reading over and over again? How could you forget it? Why was Blues Clues so successful and why did your child NEED to re-read that book? Because repetition promotes learning, growth, and empowerment.

Based on our experience (and a bunch of brain science), we know that multiple weeks of Avid camp will benefit your child – it will result in greater skill development, increased self-confidence, higher levels of risk assessment/environmental awareness, and an improved ability to connect socially with others.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.
