Kayaking Camp Golden - 2nd to 7th - Day Camps

Our Kayaking Day Camp takes campers out on both flatwater and whitewater, to experience the joy of paddling independently and also as a team. Under the guidance of our highly qualified instructors, campers will learn basic strokes, rescue techniques, river reading, and water safety as they navigate some of the most beautiful lakes and waterways in Colorado’s Front Range.

Campers learn skills tailored to their level, progressing as they build proficiency and comfort. We group them by grade — 2nd – 4th graders or 5th – 7th graders — and give them plenty of individualized attention as they develop confidence and deepen their technical skills, stroke by stroke.

Kayaking Day Camp campers should have some previous experience paddling in standing or moving water. In order to register for this program, campers should feel fully comfortable on open water and be comfortable being fully submerged in water for short periods of time. If a camper does not meet this minimum skill requirement, we reserve the right to move a camper to a different program (if space is available) or remove the camper from the group and offer a credit.

As part of our Covid safety measures, we are offering two Golden locations to limit the capacities at a camp drop-off/pick-up facility.

Flat Water

Places We Go: Evergreen Lake, Chatfield Reservoir

Campers spend their first two or three days mastering flat-water skills getting comfortable balancing on their board, learning paddle strokes, and practicing rescue techniques before they ever steer their kayak towards moving water.

Places We Go: Clear Creek, South Platte

During the second half of the week, campers will leave flat-water behind to build knowledge and skills in moving water, practicing their technique in some of the Front Range’s premier bodies of water. Please note that our kayaking locations will depend on water levels and group ability.

Why Sign Up For Multiple Weeks?

Do you remember that old TV show Blues Clues? It was the most successful kids’ show of all time. Do you remember that book that your child insisted on reading over and over again? How could you forget it? Why was Blues Clues so successful and why did your child NEED to re-read that book? Because repetition promotes learning, growth, and empowerment.

Based on our experience (and a bunch of brain science), we know that multiple weeks of Avid camp will benefit your child – it will result in greater skill development, increased self-confidence, higher levels of risk assessment/environmental awareness, and an improved ability to connect socially with others.

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.
