Expedition Paddlesports Colorado - 5th to 6th - Expedition

Our expedition camp on Colorado’s Arkansas River is built for 5th – 6th graders with paddling experience* who can’t wait to spend a week on the water. They’ll set up camp in the shadow of the majestic Collegiate Peaks, spending every night sleeping under the stars and every day kayaking, stand up paddleboarding and whitewater rafting along one of the country’s most beautiful rivers.

The group of up to 13 campers and two expert instructors will partner with the top-notch team at Rocky Mountain Outdoor Center, who will lend support throughout the week with specialized gear, private river access and decades of experience navigating the Arkansas. Together they’ll perfect basic paddling techniques and practice rescues, river reading, rapid scouting, moving water navigation and more. Back on dry land, campers will pitch tents and cook their own meals in our professional expedition kitchen complete with our Camp Chef 2 burner stoves as they hone their camping skills.

After a week spent paddling along and camping alongside the river, expedition campers come away steeped in confidence, equipped with a host of solid skills and full of newfound appreciation for authentic outdoor adventure.

* While beginning paddlers are welcome, participants should have some previous experience paddling in standing or moving water, be comfortable being fully submerged in water for short periods of time and feel excited to spend five full days on watercraft.

* Departure and pick up are in Louisville, CO.

The Week's Adventures

Stand Up Paddleboarding

White Water Rafting

Campers will first start honing their skills on flatwater for 1-2 days, practicing paddling techniques, bracing, rolling and self-rescue and gaining confidence before they move on to moving water later in the week. After a day of intro to moving water, they’ll get comfortable with their equipment and perfect their posture as they explore the ins and outs of the Arkansas River.

Atop their stand up paddleboards, campers will hone basic SUP strokes and test their balance and core strength. They’ll challenge their skills with games and tour some of Colorado’s most stunning sites.

Supported by seasoned Rocky Mountain Outdoor Center guides, campers will take the plunge into a full day of rafting, working together to navigate classic whitewater rapids in one of the most popular rafting destinations in the country.

Throughout the week, campers will spend their downtime playing games and sharing stories around the campfire, practicing important interpersonal skills like problem solving, communication and teamwork.

Campers will get comfortable sleeping and cooking in the great outdoors, learning how to set up and store their gear and supplies and keep their campsite clean and cozy. They’ll also take turns making meals on camping stoves to fuel their fellow paddlers.

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.
