Survival Skills Camp: Kid Vs. Wild

Golden – Survival Skills Camp

Our Survival Skills Day Camp introduces campers to the beauty and power of the natural world as they learn to survive and thrive outdoors. Taught by our accomplished instructors, campers spend a full week exploring Golden’s Front Range, hiking, canoeing and learning key survival skills—navigation, animal tracking, tool making, fire safety—to keep them safe and self-sufficient in the wilderness.

Campers take on activities tailored to their age and level, advancing as their proficiency and comfort grow. We also group them by grade—2nd – 4th graders in Skills Camp, 5th – 7th graders on our Adventure Team—giving them the individual attention they need to deepen their survival skills and build confidence outdoors.

Survival Skills Day Camp campers don’t need any previous survival or outdoor experience.

THE WEEK’S ADVENTURES

Hiking

Survival Skills

Canoeing

Places We Go: Genesee Park, Corwina Park, Mt. Falcon Park, Lookout Mountain

On their hikes campers learn basic navigation skills, explore the principles of Leave No Trace and learn to observe and identify useful plants as they build awareness, appreciation and respect for the world around them.

Places We Go: Genesee Park, Corwina Park, Mt. Falcon Park, Lookout Mountain

We teach campers how to track animals, identify scat, find food and medicine in the wild and fashion utensils and shelter from gathered materials. We also cover the basics of flintknapping, tool making and fire safety, giving campers hands-on practice with hand-drill and bow-drill fire tools.

Places We Go: Arvada-Blunn Reservoir

Out on the water campers master the basics of paddling a canoe, getting familiar with water safety and canoeing equipment as they hone their technique. They’ll also learn how to read terrain to lead them to water and purify the water they find.

MEET YOUR CAMP DIRECTOR

Daniel Fluharty

Daniel started adventuring as a kid growing up in Arkansas and hasn’t stopped since. He took a job working at summer camps as soon as he was old enough, and became a caving, climbing and backpacking guide and a climbing and canyoneering instructor during his college years at Western Kentucky University and Metropolitan State University. After graduating with a degree in recreation management, he worked as a lead climbing and mountain biking guide at Apex Ex Adventure Trips.

A Wilderness First Responder and American Mountain Guides Association Single Pitch Climbing Instructor, Daniel spends as much time as he can mountain biking, rock climbing, splitboarding, backpacking and playing soccer. He loves working with kids in the outdoors, harnessing their natural spirit for exploration and guiding them in new and exciting adventures.

Why Sign Up For Multiple Weeks?

Do you remember that old TV show Blues Clues? It was the most successful kids show of all time. Do you remember that book that your child insisted on reading over and over again? How could you forget it. Why was Blues Clues so successful and why did your child NEED to re-read that book? Because repetition promotes learning, growth, and empowerment.

Based on our experience (and a bunch of brain science), we know that multiple weeks of Avid camp will benefit your child – it will result in greater skill development, increased self-confidence, higher levels of risk assessment/environmental awareness, and an improved ability to connect socially with others.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.

OUR APPROACH TO SAFETY
