Camp at Home Portland, OR - 1st to 5th

Camp at Home brings an instructor exclusively to you to provide a small and private group with the authentic programming you know us for! This week-long camp will conveniently take place around your home, backyard, and nearby parks and trails. Whether it’s just your kids, or you pair up with friends, this camp experience gives you the opportunity to control exactly who is in your own private group of up to 4 kids.

Your instructor will be with you all week, building on the previous day’s lessons to boost your child’s confidence with topics like: navigation, shelter building, outdoor cooking, wildlife education, Leave No Trace outdoor ethics, emergency response & preparedness, and much more! Adventures will happen in and around the neighborhood on foot and potentially bike. Camp at Home is a camper led experience- if your child wants to spend more time practicing knots and shelter building or cooking up meals on a camp stove, we’ll easily be able to tailor the week to their interests.

Personalized Camp

Outdoor Skills

Outdoor Cooking & Nutrition Education

Biking & Hiking

Due to the limited group size, Camp at Home is a unique and customizable experience. On the first day of the program, campers will take part in planning the week’s activities with their instructor. There are very few time restrictions for activities, so if the group wants to dive deeper into one activity or cut another one short, our staff and campers are empowered to steer their experience in the direction of their interests and excitement!

Groups will spend time honing their skills through activities like expedition adventure planning, setting up shelters and practicing their navigation skills with a map and compass. Along the way, they’ll be assessing risk and understanding what it takes to be confident and self-reliant in the outdoors.

Campers will try their hands at cooking on a camp stove and also focus on outdoor-ready foods like trail snacks and other no-bake recipes. They’ll learn about meal planning and how to fuel their bodies with nutritious food for outdoor adventures.

Kids will explore the surrounding neighborhood on foot or bike. If parents desire, instructors can also suggest local parks or trailheads for camp to meet at throughout the week. We’ll cover basic biking and hiking skills and explore the natural world together.

What is one fun fact about you?

I love plants, and I can identify many of the flowers, shrubs, and trees on the west coast!

Why do you enjoy working with kids?

A leaf is a boat and a stick is a magic wand. Two leaves and a stick are a house for a fairy, or perhaps a field mouse.

What is one fun fact about you?

I worked with a wilderness therapy non profit where the kids backpacked with llamas.

Why do you enjoy working with kids?

I love having the opportunity to shape the future by taking kids outside and helping their growth as both outdoor enthusiasts and as human beings. Through nature and recreation we are able to teach so many life-lessons.

Why Sign Up For Multiple Weeks?

Repetition promotes learning, growth, and empowerment. Based on our experience, and much research, we know that multiple weeks of Avid camp will benefit your child – it will result in greater skill development, increased self-confidence, higher levels of risk assessment/environmental awareness, and an improved ability to connect socially with others.

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.
