Staff Training is not only about content – it’s about enjoying time together too!  We’ll have campfires, fun meals, and skit nights to celebrate with one another as we prepare for an incredible season.  The strength of our team will help us when times get tough, keep things interesting, and make for an unbelievably fun summer for our campers.  It’s so key!

Driver Training – For all eligible drivers (21+), you will go through our MasterDrive training.

  • Part 1 is a classroom portion (virtual for Resident Camp, in-person for Expeditions)

Travel to Training - Which Staff Are You?

Which Staff Are You?
In our experience, our staff fit a few categories, for which we’ve outlined the options for you. Find the option that fits you best.

“I’m flying in”

1) Snag a shuttle & tell us which one in Paycor.
2) Arrange a ride with a friend/fellow staff to get you to training (and thank them profusely).
3) Grab a Uber or Lyft (this is a pricey option)
4) Public Transportation – www.rtd-denver.com

“My wonderful friend/family member/partner is dropping me off.”

1) Thank them profusely, treat them to breakfast, and remind them of how awesome they are. You can get a ride from there with us in our vans.
2) Thank them normally, treat them to a crisp elbow bump, and remind them of when you need a ride at the end of the summer. You can still get a ride from there with us in our vans.
3) Seriously? If you’re looking for a third option, go with #1.  It’ll feel good I promise!

“I’m driving my own car to training”

1) Avid4 HQ – Drive yourself there, plenty of parking and be sure to be on time!
2) Chatfield State Park – We will have our staff park outside of the park and we will provide shuttles into the park.  More information coming here.

“I’m getting a ride with an Avid4 friend!”
1) Sweet! We love new friends.

Driver Training (ages 21+)

As a driver for this coming season, you will need to participate in our MasterDrive trainings with our very own Paul Dreyer!

The training is in three parts:

  • Part 1 is a classroom portion (virtual for Resident Camp, in-person for Expeditions)
  • Part 2 is live, defensive driving on a closed course.
  • Part 3 is driving practice in your camp area.  Read below for more information.

This certification will not only allow you to drive vans safely for Avid this summer, but can apply to your personal insurance for lower rates.  Win-win!

This is required training for drivers, so please read below for details and confirm with us that these work or if you have any concerns.  Here are the details:

Life at Resident Camp

Food Service

We are extremely proud of the service we provide to our staff and campers and by no means will we be ‘roughing it’.  We can accommodate a wide variety of dietary restrictions and diets from our industrial kitchens at both sites.

We are fortunate to have accomplished chefs on our staff that are dedicated to providing some of the best food in the biz!  Check out the ‘Prepare for the Season’ section to tell us about any dietary restrictions you have.

Lodging

It’s obvious and worth noting – one of the biggest differences at Overnight Camp is where you will call home.  On one side – hundreds of acres in pristine Colorado wilderness.  On the other – trading your plush mattress at home for a camping pad.  It’s different.  And it’s awesome.

When on-site at Resident Camp, all of our campers live in cabins and our staff should expect to live in the cabins with the kids (with a few exceptions based on availability).  Our campers and staff enjoy the classic bunk-bed experience with single-sized foam mattresses.  We encourage our staff to bring the blankets, pillows, and pads to be as comfortable as possible while here at camp, or you can simply use your sleeping bag all summer as well – both options will be plenty comfortable!

We want everyone to be comfortable this season and it’s important to us to set clear expectations on what this summer will look like for you.  For camping gear, we encourage you to bring your own if possible, but we do have some extras for folks to borrow (for training) if necessary.  Need to borrow gear?  Click here for our Gear Form!

Weather & Elevation

Life in the mountains during the summer is simply magic.  During the day you can expect highs of 70-80F while it will cool down to 40s-50s at night, making each day very pleasant and sleep at night come easily.  Through the summer, it is typical to get an afternoon rain shower which normally lasts anywhere from 15-30 minutes at a time.

We should note that both sites are located at elevation around ~8000ft.  We want to note this for many of you coming from sea level to be prepared for the thinner air when you arrive, to go slow, drink plenty of water, and listen to your body as everyone responds differently (with most, not at all).  Acclimation usually takes just over a week, so by the end of training, you should be good to go.

Want to know more?  Feel free to get in touch with us or your mentor anytime!

Costumes, Themes, and Skits - Oh My!

We like to get wacky, wild, and crazy for all of our programs around camp, so we encourage you to pack your favorite costumes, wigs, props, and more to make each night even more exciting.

Specifically, we run fun themes for a lot of our meals at camp, like Western, Superhero, Neanderthal and more so come prepared to dress up!

Expeditions Staff

Avid4 Expedition Camps offer backcountry-based programs for campers looking for a more independent and focused experience. Our 1-week or 2-week Expedition Camps transport 5th-12th graders to some of the most stunning, secluded natural spaces in California, Colorado, Washington and Oregon for an authentic—and transformative—experience.

In addition to exploring their spectacular surroundings and logging lots of practice in their sport of choice, they learn lasting skills in everything from gear management and cooking outdoors to problem solving and teamwork. Perfect for kids and teens craving a genuine outdoor experience in a small-group setting, our eye-opening expeditions give campers the know-how and confidence they need for many adventures to come.

Trips
We offer two different styles of trips:

  • Multi-sport: these trips will try their hand at a new sport every day, such as rock climbing, mountain biking, SUP, kayaking, whitewater rafting, hiking, archery, or geocaching.
  • Single-sport: these trips will be all-in on one of our sports, meaning they will teach a 4-5 day progressive curriculum in that sport. Due to the more technical nature of these trips, only instructors hired on a Specialist in one of the sport areas will lead these Expeditions. Single-sport options vary per state and include:
    • Backpacking
    • Rock Climbing
    • Mountain Biking
    • Whitewater Paddling

Based on the nature of these trips, most trips will utilize a car camping setup (with the exception of our Backpacking Expeditions).

Questions
If you have additional questions, please reach out to Heather, the Expeditions Senior Manager, at [email protected].

From Monday, 5/23 – Saturday, 5/28 all expedition staff will be camping up at Curt Gowdy State Park, WY.

We have reserved campsites at Chatfield State Park if you’d like to stay there and shuttle each morning/afternoon throughout training. There is food provided out of that location every day that you are “on.” You are not required to camp at Chatfield if you have other accommodations/live in Colorado and would like to commute instead. The Curt Gowdy all staff training is mandatory to camp on site.

Driver Training (for 21+ staff)

As a driver for this coming season, you will need to participate in our MasterDrive trainings with our very own Paul Dreyer!

The training is in two parts – part 1 is an online classroom portion with Paul and part 2 you will do after you arrive in-person where we will practice defensive driving with our vans on a closed course!

This certification will not only allow you to drive vans safely for Avid this summer, but can apply to your personal insurance for lower rates.  Win-win!

This is required training, so please read below for details and confirm with us that these work or if you have any concerns.  Here are the details:

Expeditions
All new staff over 21 years old must be at the Avid4 Hub at 1501 Empire Road, Louisville, CO 80027 at 8 AM on 5/22.

Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or conflicts and we will work with you.  Thank you and happy driving!

Life at Expeditions

Housing during Expeditions
While on Expeditions, staff will sleep in tents every night in world-class locations like Steamboat, the Great Sand Dunes, Columbia River Gorge, and Olympic National Park.

Avid will provide 1 tent for co-instructors to share while on trip. Staff are welcomed to bring their own tent if they desire. Instructors should bring their own sleeping bag/pad system.

Food
The beauty of Expeditions is that it teaches our campers (and staff) how to be self-sufficient. This means you are the chef for your trips. But don’t worry, we provide you 13 sous chefs to help you. That’s right, campers help cook their meals. In fact, it is a recurring highlight for campers on their trip (and their parents)!

We have two Expedition menus. One we call “Basecamp” for all of our car camping trips that have a more robust kitchen setup. The second menu is tailored to our backpacking groups. All menus can accommodate (to the best of our ability) major dietary restrictions (vegan, gluten-free, nut-free, etc.). If you have a dietary restriction, make sure to complete our food survey listed under the “Prepare for the Summer” section above.

Time Off
Expeditions start early on Sunday morning and run through Friday afternoon. After pick up is complete on Friday, instructors will have 2-3 hours of de-issue from the current trip and prep for the following week’s trip. Instructors have the biggest influence over when they get out on Friday based on how clean and well organized their gear comes back on Friday. In the past, groups have gotten off between 7-8 pm on Friday.

Expedition instructors will have Friday evening off (after de-issue is complete) and all day Saturday. Instructors will report to the location around 7:30 am on Sunday.

Housing isn’t provided while you are not on an expedition (Friday & Saturday nights). However, we know that many of our expedition staff are not local to where they are leading trips. Therefore, Avid strives to set up one subsidized housing option per region we operate in.

FAQ

Where can I learn about Avid4 Adventure’s response to the COVID-19?
Click here for the latest information for staff regarding the COVID-19.

COVID Surveillance Testing for Non-Vaccinated Staff
Staff who are not yet fully vaccinated (meaning 2 weeks has passed since their last dose of the vaccine) – are subject to this policy of surveillance testing.  After they are “fully vaccinated,” they no longer need to submit surveillance testing.

If you will not be fully vaccinated by the start of training, you will need to arrive to training with proof of a negative test.  We will also have tests available for staff upon arrival to meet this need, free of cost.

For however long a staff member is not fully vaccinated, we will conduct weekly surveillance testing for those staff and gather documentation of their negative test on the Health Screening Survey.

Please ensure that you have all vaccination forms and dates of inoculation input to WorkBright as soon as you are able!

What if I don’t have all the gear that I’ll need for camping? While we don’t have a lot of adult gear to share (we are a kids camp after all), we do have some that we can lend to staff.  Please check with us ahead of arrival so that we can meet your needs.  We want you to be comfortable while camping and the best way is to bring your own gear that you know fits you well.  If you need to borrow, ensure that you fill in your requests on the proper form in Paycor!

Can I camp for only some nights at training? Once you arrive, we require all staff to spend the full amount of time with the group, as this is what makes our team as strong as it is.  If you are unable or unwilling, this may not be the job for you.

Are showers available at Chatfield State Park? Yes, for an additional fee, so bring those quarters to treat yourself to a nice shower!  You can always take a dip in the lake to rinse off too!

Can you accommodate my dietary restriction or allergy?  Our Dining Service team is able to meet a lot of needs, so please advise your director of any dietary needs/restrictions. While we can and do a lot, we can’t guarantee your requests so please check with us ahead of time!  Check the ‘Food and Lodging’ section for more details.

Can I bring alcohol/cannabis to enjoy when we are done for the day?  No – we want to emulate the rules we follow during the summer and that starts at training.  With 24/7 care of campers during the season, being on school property, and the commitment to provide the best care for our families, all staff must commit to being 100% each day and not under the influence of any substance.  There’s no better time to start a healthy summer than at training!

What if the weather is cold/rainy/etc.? The show must go on! We will continue to have an awesome time camping, eating and training together, no matter the weather. Please practice Leave No Trace rule #1 by planning ahead and being prepared with the proper gear, clothing and plenty of extra layers.

Can I bring my dog to training, backpacking, or to camp? Sadly, you can’t.  We love dogs, but our agreement does not allow pets beyond those exclusively approved in our contracts.  Please make alternate plans for the care of your pet for the summer.  We know this sucks and promise you can snuggle the approved dogs as much as you like.

Do I need to bring a bike for bike training day? No, Avid4 Adventure will provide bikes and helmets for staff for all biking training days. If you have your own mountain bike and would prefer to use it, you are welcome to do so and it is highly encouraged.

Where can I learn about the programs? Check out our website (the one you are already on) for more information on a specific location or program.

What should I pack for each day?  See below for a packing list for each program!

  • Expeditions Staff

    LOCATIONS OF TRAINING
Training for Expeditions has multiple locations that will be utilized throughout the time.

The majority of training will take place at the Avid4 Hub at 1501 Empire Rd. Louisville, CO 80027.

From Monday, 5/23 – Saturday, 5/28 all expedition staff will be camping up at Curt Gowdy State Park, WY.

Our backpacking training will be in Golden Gate State Park, CO.

  • FAQ
