Leadership Development & Mentorship Opportunities

Lifelong Credentials

Leaders-in-Training learn what it takes to lead, including mentoring younger campers, teaching aspects of an adventure activity, and being a role model for others (which they will put into use with our Camp Blue Sky 5th graders). Our experienced staff will provide real-time feedback to these young leaders, teaching a wide range of tips and techniques that would take weeks to acquire in other settings. From public speaking to teamwork and conflict resolution, teens build leadership skills that will serve them in school, work and all the communities they want to be part of.

Leaders-In-Training embark on a 4 Day/3 Night adventure into the Colorado backcountry. Before they leave, they work together to organize every aspect of the trip, from menu planning to supply decisions to gear packing. Out in the wilderness, they’ll navigate backcountry trails, cook their own meals, attempt to summit a high peak and camp under the stars all while following the  Leave No Trace Principles. They’ll also take part in a solo experience, hiking out from basecamp to spend some reflective time on their own. While our staff are with them throughout, teens are trusted to assess the challenges they encounter and make their own decisions, a vital exercise in building independence, problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Throughout their two-week session, Leaders-in-Training will have the chance to take on our core outdoor activities –  canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, mountain biking, and rock climbing – and many other classic activities such as archery, tree-climbing, community service projects, and much more. They’ll push themselves to learn new skills and advance their proficiency in the adventure sports they’re most passionate about.

In addition to incredible personal growth and the abundance of practical feedback they receive from our staff throughout their two-week session, our Leaders-in-Training leave camp with some very valuable credentials:
–    A ton of great experience and a strong foundation for future work with kids in the outdoors
–    A nationally-recognized training in the Leave No Trace principles
–    The opportunity to become Staff-in-Training with Avid4 Adventure (an expedition experience for entering 11th-12th graders)

Camp Value
"This was the first sleep away camp and backpacking experience for my daughter. The counselors were incredibly welcoming and reassuring. Over the two weeks she not only learned the challenging outdoor skills but also, and more importantly, the soft skills of leadership, collaboration and communication. She made incredible bonds with her counselor and made new friends. She loved the thrill and adventure of the backpack; especially being in new situations and learning new skills. The camp pushed her out of her comfort zone and helped develop her self confidence."

Meet Your Camp Director

Meet Your Director, Claire Dunlap

Claire discovered her passion for working with kids at overnight camp in 2010 and has been in the camping industry every year since. She went to Murray State University in her home state of Kentucky, where she majored in Outdoor Recreation and Youth and Nonprofit Leadership. After college, she spent her first summer working at Southwoods, a camp in Upstate New York, as an Outdoor Adventure Instructor and quickly climbed to becoming the Director of the Outdoor Adventure program in 2012. Claire was hands-on in the program until 2017 and led her staff and campers on hiking, camping, mountain biking, caving, rock climbing, and paddling adventures all over the Adirondacks. She’s also directed programs for the YMCA and Camp Adventure, where she worked on military bases to serve in their Child Development Centers. She loves working with kids because it provides an opportunity to be a part of something bigger than herself, empowering campers to be themselves, and grow outside their comfort zones. Claire has a reputation for personal connection and creating safe, supportive environments for kids to realize their potential and discover new passions. You can find her exploring the outdoors, riding her beloved bike Windy, believing in unicorns, traveling the globe, and spending time with friends and family.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.

OUR APPROACH TO SAFETY
