Advanced Kayaking Camp Wash Park - 4th to 7th - Day Camp

Our Advanced Kayaking Day Camp teaches campers intermediate kayaking skills with a special focus on moving water.  The first day will be on flat water to practice and review wet exits and rolls.  Days 2-5 will be on moving water where campers will enjoy paddling independently and working as a team to hone kayaking skills. Under the guidance of our able instructors, campers will navigate some of the most spectacular lakes and waterways in Colorado’s Front Range.

Advanced Kayaking Camp Prerequisites:

  • I have completed Avid4 Adventure’s Kayaking Single-Sport Camp.
  • I can paddle a kayak forward, backward, and in circles.
  • I know how to swim and would be comfortable “swimming” a section of rapids.
  • I can flip my kayak and perform a wet exit.
  • I can stop my kayak in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • I can turn my kayak to the left and right using appropriate strokes.

Please note: In order to register for this program, campers MUST be able to demonstrate the prerequisite skills listed above and feel fully comfortable on open water and be comfortable being fully submerged in water for short periods of time. If a camper does not meet these minimum skill requirements, we reserve the right to move a camper to a different program (if space is available) or remove the camper from the group and offer a credit. If you have any questions about whether Advanced Kayaking Day Camp is right for your child, please give us a call at (720) 249-2412.

THE WEEK’S ADVENTURES

Flat Water

Whitewater

Places We Go: Chatfield State Park

Campers spend their first day on flatwater refreshing their skills by practicing wet exists and rolls.

Places We Go: South Platte, Clear Creek, Boulder Creek

During the rest of the week, campers will leave flat-water behind to build upon their knowledge and skills in moving water, practicing their technique in local rivers. Please note that our kayaking locations will depend on water levels and group ability.

MEET YOUR CAMP DIRECTOR

Zach Hykan

I love to work with kids because they bring such high energy and passion for learning new activities and skills. It’s inspiring for me to see kids leap headfirst into a new thing, even when it’s hard or scary. When a kid is truly and fully absorbed with something it’s unlike anything else. To be able to take what I love in the world and try to present it in a way where it gets kids equally excited is one of the great joys of choosing to work with children. My favorite outdoor adventures are climbing, skiing, mountain and road biking, and hiking. A few of my big adventures have been climbing South Six Shooter in Moab, Skiing in Japan, and mountain biking in redwood forests. I’m also hoping to climb every 14er in Colorado before I turn 30. I love working for Avid4 Adventure because I get to see children develop a love for the same outdoor activities that I do. I also get to see my friends and coworkers have a blast hanging out with kids and helping them get stoked about nature.

Why Sign Up For Multiple Weeks?

Do you remember that old TV show Blue’s Clues? It was the most successful kids’ show of all time. Do you remember that book that your child insisted on reading over and over again? How could you forget it? Why was Blues Clue’s so successful and why did your child NEED to re-read that book? Because repetition promotes learning, growth, and empowerment.

Based on our experience (and a bunch of brain science), we know that multiple weeks of Avid camp will benefit your child – it will result in greater skill development, increased self-confidence, higher levels of risk assessment/environmental awareness, and an improved ability to connect socially with others.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.

OUR APPROACH TO SAFETY
