Expedition Paddlesports Colorado - 9th to 12th Grade - Expedition

Dive into adventure with our Expedition Paddlesports Summer Camp, a weeklong camp for campers ready to take their paddling skills to the next level.* They’ll spend every day on the water, kayaking, and whitewater rafting, and every night on dry land, camping under the stars.

Supported by two experienced Avid4 Adventure staffers and professional guides from a local whitewater rafting company, the team of up to 13 campers will hone their paddling skills as they raft and kayak the river’s rapids. They’ll also venture to nearby lakes to perfect their still-water skills in kayaks. When they’re not paddling, campers will turn their attention to the art of camping, learning to cook, clean and sleep comfortably in the great outdoors.

After a week soaking up new skills, forging friendships and deepening their appreciation of the natural world, expedition campers will come away with fresh reserves of confidence, energized for their next adventure.

Colorado Expedition campers will spend the week alongside the Arkansas River, enjoying some of the best rafting in the state and guided by Rocky Mountain Outdoor Center.

* While beginning paddlers are welcome, participants should have some previous experience paddling in standing or moving water, be comfortable being fully submerged in water for short periods of time and feel excited to spend five full, physically demanding days, on watercraft.

Difficulty Rating: 2 – Single Sport Specialty: For campers seeking more specialized activity days and excelling in technical skills in a single sport.

Wilderness Rating: 1 Improved Site Camping: Campers sleep in basecamp tents. No access to showers, or running water. Campers will have access to portable toilets or pit toilets that do not have flush capabilities. All water is brought to site filtered and used for drinking, hand washing, and food preparation.

Camping

Campers will practice flat-water kayaking skills, including bracing, rolling and self-rescue techniques, plus hone their whitewater skills—river reading, hydrology, rapids scouting and more.

Campers will build core strength and good balance atop paddleboards as they play fun games, work on team building, learn proper paddle strokes, practice rescue techniques, and maneuver their boards.

Campers will have a blast white water rafting while they will learn the basics of rafting, safety and equipment and how to use paddling techniques as they learn to work together floating down the river.

Throughout the week, campers will practice important interpersonal skills like communication, problem solving and teamwork. Through games during downtime, stories around the campfire and time alone reflecting, they’ll build confidence and comfort within the group and as an individual.

Campers will learn to maintain a campsite, setting up and breaking down their equipment, keeping their space tidy and cooking their own meals in the backcountry which fosters independence and valuable skills they will use throughout their lives. They’ll play games during downtime and swap stories around the campfire, building deep, lasting friendships with their fellow expedition-mates.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.

OUR APPROACH TO SAFETY
