Expedition Paddling 7th – 9th Grade in California

Built for 7th – 9th graders ready to perfect their paddling skills,* our weeklong expedition camp serves up five full days of on-the-water adventure. From their home base on the banks of the American River in the heart of Gold Country, campers will camp out by night and spend every day kayaking, stand up paddleboarding and whitewater rafting in one of California’s most popular paddling destinations.

The group of no more than 13 campers and two seasoned Avid4 Adventure instructors will partner with expert guides from American Whitewater Expeditions to explore the ins and outs of the American River, honing their flatwater skills in its relaxing reservoirs and rafting and kayaking through its rapids. They’ll get the lay of the water on nearby Jenkinson Lake for a day of stand up paddleboarding and build their camping skills at their American River Resort campsite.

After a week spent paddling, camping and teambuilding and in a range of truly stunning natural settings, campers will leave with solid skills, lasting friendships and the confidence to take on any adventure, by river, lake or land.

* While beginning paddlers are welcome, participants should have some previous experience paddling in standing or moving water, be comfortable being fully submerged in water for short periods of time and feel excited to spend five full days on watercraft.

The Week's Adventures

Kayaking

Stand Up Paddleboarding

White Water Rafting

Camping

Teambuilding

Campers will paddle through the secluded coves of Folsom Lake, learning flat-water skills like bracing, rolling and self-rescue. When they’re ready for whitewater, the rapids of the river’s South Fork offer ample opportunities to master river reading, ferry angles, catching eddies and more.

On a day trip to Sly Park Recreation Area, campers will take to Jenkinson Lake for stand up paddleboarding practice, learning basic strokes and rescue techniques, playing games and getting comfortable balancing on their boards as they navigate the lake.

The week will include two epic rafting trips led by the professional guides at American Whitewater Expeditions. Campers spend an entire day on one of the hardest rivers out there and will work as a team to navigate their raft through both relaxing stretches and rushing whitewater, including the biggest Class 3 rapid on the Middle Fork.

Campers will spend the land-based part of their week at the American River Resort working on their camping skills. They’ll learn to pitch tents, store supplies, cook meals on a camping stove and keep their site clean and cozy.

Throughout the week, campers will spend time with their team playing games, sharing stories and practicing essential interpersonal skills like communication and problem solving. They’ll also have time on their own to reflect, bolstering their independence and self-assuredness.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.

OUR APPROACH TO SAFETY
