Survival Skills Camp Mill Valley - 2nd to 4th - Day Camp

Our Survival Skills Day Camp introduces campers to the power and practical value of the natural world as they learn to survive and thrive outdoors. Alongside our accomplished instructors, campers spend a full week exploring Marin County’s beautiful outdoor recreation destinations, hiking, and learning essential survival skills—navigation, animal tracking, tool making, fire safety—to keep them safe and self-reliant in the wilderness.

Campers tackle challenges suited to their age and skill level, advancing as their proficiency and comfort grow. With small group sizes of no more than 13, this gives them the individual attention they need to deepen their survival skills and build confidence outdoors.

Survival Skills Day Camp campers don’t need any previous survival or outdoor experience.

There is a shuttle to/from San Francisco available. Details can be found here.

Navigation

Places We Go: China Camp, Marin County Open Space

On their hikes, campers learn basic navigation skills, explore the principles of Leave No Trace and learn to observe and identify useful plants as they build awareness, appreciation and respect for the world around them.

Places We Go: China Camp, Marin County Open Space

We teach campers how to track animals, identify scat, find food and medicine in the wild and fashion utensils and shelter from gathered materials. We also cover the basics of flint knapping, tool making and fire safety, giving campers hands-on practice with hand-drill and bow-drill fire tools.

Places We Go: China Camp, Marin County Open Space

Campers will use the sun, sky, trees, and sticks as their tools as they learn to produce and use ancient navigational aides. With these techniques they’ll learn to find their way in any situation!

MEET YOUR CAMP DIRECTOR

Amanda Olson

To me, being outdoors and having a sense of adventure is the most powerful thing. I grew up being outdoors and active every day and I want to encourage every child to partake in adventure! I feel that exposure created my love of the outdoors that has made me the person I am today! Fresh air, embracing the elements, and being able to constantly find something new to admire is my favorite part of working outdoors! My favorite part about working with kids is their amazing contagious energy! I was formerly a registered behavior technician and have a passion for working with children. If you asked me what I love most about working for Avid4 Adventure I would say EVERYTHING! This is a question that I truly can answer for hours. Avid4 Adventure is so professional, has the most empowering team, and truly is changing the world for the better! There is not a day that goes by that I do not think about Avid and the positive impact it has on campers and staff. Camping, kayaking, biking, and anything active is typically how I spend my free time and trail running is always my favorite adventure!

Why Sign Up For Multiple Weeks?

Do you remember that old TV show Blues Clues? It was the most successful kids’ show of all time. Do you remember that book that your child insisted on reading over and over again? How could you forget it? Why was Blues Clues so successful and why did your child NEED to re-read that book? Because repetition promotes learning, growth, and empowerment.

Based on our experience (and a bunch of brain science), we know that multiple weeks of Avid camp will benefit your child – it will result in greater skill development, increased self-confidence, higher levels of risk assessment/environmental awareness, and an improved ability to connect socially with others.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.
