Our Valmont Bike Park After School Program in Boulder, Colorado offers students entering 2nd – 8th grades an amazing outlet after school. Participants attend once per week for a five week session.
Mentored by our experienced instructors, participants learn the basics of bike park free riding before mastering more advanced skills. Kids ride on a variety of terrain including pump-tracks, single-track, dirt jumps, dual slalom, and slope-style, while also learning basic bike maintenance like changing flats and solving gear problems.
The park’s variety of challenges provides plenty of opportunities for bikers of all levels to build their technical abilities, while keeping even the most avid riders on their toes.
Safety is our first priority. While risk is inherent in all outdoor activities, we pride ourselves on teaching how to assess situations, use sound judgment and make good decisions while taking on appropriate risks. Please note that Valmont Bike Park programs involve a higher level of risk due to the terrain and skills taught. We mitigate these risks by requiring protective equipment, providing environmental briefings, practicing falling techniques, and challenge by choice across all elements. Participants should be confident riding on two wheels (without training wheels).Register Now
Bike Park Riding
After an initial skill evaluation, we adjust our instruction to support participants at their levels as they take on bike park features including pump tracks, dirt jumps, dual slalom, slope style and single track cross country trails, practicing good trail etiquette as they ride.
Through riding different features of the park, bikers get comfortable with a range of biking skills, including body positioning, falling techniques, cornering mechanics, aerial maneuvers and maintaining momentum on rocks and sand.
We teach basic bicycle repair and maintenance, and bikers will also learn to safety check their bikes, gears and tires.
Participants can use their own bikes. For safety, we require that bikes have platform pedals–pedals with cages and clipless pedals can be unsafe while jumping. Campers may also rent a Specialized brand bike from us specifically designed for park riding for $50 per week. With a single brake, no gears, an elongated frame and a low seat, these bikes let campers experience riding like the pros. (Plus, as rental bikes stay at Valmont overnight, you don’t have to worry about loading and unloading a bike every day).
We require participants to wear elbow pads, knee pads and bike gloves. You can bring your own or rent them from us for $15 per session. Knee pads must cover the knee and shin, and elbow pads must cover the elbow and most of the forearm.
WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY
While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep participants safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved—what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong—so bikers learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.
