Leaders-In-Training

9th-11th Grade Overnight Camp

Our Leaders-in-Training Program gives teens life-changing opportunities to take on meaningful leadership roles at camp, push their limits on a five-day expedition in the wilderness and grow their outdoor skills, building lasting knowledge and experience they can use throughout their lives.

Under the supervision of our most senior instructors, Leaders-in-Training work behind the scenes in every aspect of the camp experience, from teaching outdoor activities to younger campers to planning all-camp events to working in the dining hall. Along the way, they develop solid leadership and hands-on teaching skills, plus the confidence to put them to use.

Their two-week session also includes an extended expedition, a mountain-scaling Via Ferrata experience, a camp betterment project, the chance to earn a First Aid certification and daily opportunities to engage in their favorite adventure sports. And that’s on top of all the other incredible moments—playing games, going for impromptu hikes, sharing stories, hanging out with new friends—that make overnight camp so unforgettable.

Entering 11th – 12th graders can apply to become part of the Avid4 Adventure Staff-in-Training Program

Leadership Development

Expedition Training

Adventure Sports

During their first week at camp, Leaders-in-Training learn what it takes to lead, including mentoring younger campers, teaching every aspect of an adventure activity, leading a group and modeling good behavior. Our experienced staff provides real-time feedback to these young leaders, teaching a wide range of tips and techniques that would take weeks to acquire in other settings. From public speaking to teamwork and conflict resolution, teens build leadership skills that will serve them in school, work and countless other future endeavors.

Leaders-in-Training embark on a five-day adventure into the backcountry. Before they leave, they work together to organize every aspect of the trip, from menu planning to supply decisions to gear packing. Out in the wilderness, they’ll navigate backcountry trails, cook their own meals, attempt to summit a high peak and camp under the stars. They’ll also take part in a solo experience, hiking out from basecamp to spend some reflective time on their own. While our staff is with them every step of the way on this extended expedition, teens are trusted to assess the challenges they encounter and make their own decisions, an invaluable exercise in building independence, problem solving experience and teamwork skills.

Throughout their two-week session, Leaders-in-Training will have the chance to take on a variety of outdoor activities, including canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, mountain biking, rock climbing and scaling the side of a mountain with a Via Ferrata experience. They’ll push themselves to learn new skills and advance their proficiency in the adventure sports they’re most passionate about.

Lifelong Credentials

In addition to incredible personal growth and the abundance of practical feedback they receive from our staff throughout their two-week session, our Leaders-in-Training leave camp with some very valuable credentials:

  • A ton of great experience and a strong foundation for future work with kids in the outdoors
  • A First Aid certification
  • A nationally recognized training in Leave No Trace principles
  • The opportunity to become Staff-in-Training with Avid4 Adventure (entering 11th-12th graders)

Meet Your Camp Director

Heather Cardneau

Meet Your Director, Heather Cardneau

Growing up at summer camp transformed my life.  I have a degree in Outdoor Recreation, Leadership, and Management from Northern Michigan University, and I have worked for the past four years as the Director of SpringHill’s Overnight Camp Teen Program.  My desire is to provide quality outdoor experiences that will transform campers’ lives. I believe that the outdoors provides an excellent platform for learning, growing, and seeing what you are made of. Outdoor adventure is much more than the trails, rocks, or water.  When you unplug from the barrage of media constantly telling you who to be, and you begin to master skills that the outdoors can teach, I believe you’ll become stronger, more confident, and embrace your true self. Camp provides an escape and a chance to slow down and reflect on who you want to become.  In my past 10 years of working with teenagers, I have discovered that everyone deeply desires to be known, know others, and a place to belong. Advid4 Adventure’s Resident Overnight Camps can be that place. Can’t wait to see you there!

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.

OUR APPROACH TO SAFETY
