11th – 12th Grade Staff-in-Training Resident Overnight Camp

Our Staff-in-Training program gives teens entering 11th – 12th grades a summer of hands-on adventure, learning and leadership. Designed to teach what it takes to become a leader at camp, this transformative two-week session imparts skills and confidence you’ll carry with you back to school and into future endeavors.

Working with a group of 1st – 6th graders at our Mt. Evans location, you’ll have the opportunity to mentor younger campers and guide them on daily outdoor adventures. You’ll roll up your sleeves to pitch in with camp operations and practice everything from activity planning to group management. You’ll receive specialized training in Leave No Trace principles and even try your hand at being a zipline guide. From kayaking with campers to communicating with parents to coordinating events, you’ll adventure and lead in countless meaningful ways.

How to apply:  Within a week after you register, we’ll send you an application for the Staff-in-Training program. Our team will review it to assess whether the program is the right fit for you (if not, we’ll refund your tuition). Space is limited, so register early!

Leadership Lessons

Work with Avid4 Adventure instructors to lead groups of 1st – 6th grade campers on land as they hone their rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking skills. You’ll also help them get comfortable on water with sports like kayaking, canoeing, and stand up paddleboarding.

Spend time each day diving into the Leave No Trace Seven Principles as part of an exclusive program we designed in partnership with Leave No Trace. You’ll teach, learn and even earn a certificate in Leave No Trace fundamentals.

Each day offers ways to help keep camp running smoothly, from food prep and facility cleanup to expedition packing and Parent’s Day logistics. You’ll go behind the scenes to see what makes our overnight camps tick, building your work ethic and an undeniable sense of accomplishment.

As a Staff-in-Training, you’ll take time every day to learn and practice fundamental leadership skills, including the basics of Love and Logic, camper management, delivering feedback and running environmental briefings. You’ll even pitch, plan and run your own all-camp event.

What You'll Take Away

In addition to a rewarding, enriching two weeks at camp, you’ll leave your session with:

  • A strong foundation for future work with kids in the outdoors
  • Practical professional skills and job experience
  • A nationally recognized training in Leave No Trace principles
  • References and job recommendations from our staff
  • Community service credit (if applicable)

"One of the most incredible things about kids is their hardwired willingness to try new things. But as they approach their teens, that enviable disposition starts to diminish, worn away by feelings of self-consciousness or self-doubt. Avid4 Adventure awakens that innate try-new-things mentality, creating an environment that makes it comfortable and fun for kids of all ages—even tweens—to try something new."

"Everything about this company and what it stands for is beyond amazing and so up my alley! A company that wants to encourage kids to unplug for one week (or more), learn to try new outdoor activities, and just plain love the outdoors is just what this world needs, especially with kids becoming more connected to their devices. Knowing that I can possibly have some small influence on kids' lives, teach them something new, or finally get them off of those training wheels gives me endless reasons to get out of bed and love going to “work”. I just love everything about this company."

"Avid4Adventure helped our son realize a love for outdoors, adventure, as well as going outside his comfort zone and learning new skills, with confident encouragement, guidance, and leadership every step of the way. Thank you!"

Meet Your Camp Director

Eric Rightor

I have dedicated my personal and professional life to the outdoors and I am sold on its power as a both a playground and a classroom. I am thrilled to be part of the team here at Avid4 and provide your child with an incredible experience here at Mt. Evans. For the past 10 years, I have been designing and leading overnight camp programs for kids, including at Camp Coniston, North Woods Camp for Boys, Pleasant Valley Camp for Girls, and lastly as the Executive Director at Camp Bauercrest. I have seen first-hand the power of the outdoors to teach, test, and transform kids into their best selves – confident, independent, and part of something greater than they imagined. While the activities are undeniably fun and the Mt. Evans location is gorgeous, the magic of camp is between these lines where friendships are formed, bonds with role models are made, accomplishments are celebrated, challenge is embraced, and moments last for a lifetime. I believe so strongly in our community here at Colorado Mountain Camp and can’t wait for you and your child to experience CMC for yourselves. I look forward to seeing you at Mt. Evans this summer!

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.
