Rock Solid Adventure
7th – 8th Grade Expedition Rock Climbing Camp

7th – 8th Grade Expedition Rock Climbing Camp

Our weeklong expedition in Colorado’s Staunton State Park is built for 7th – 8th graders with climbing experience* excited about advancing their skills in authentic settings. Immersed in the park’s natural beauty—lush meadows, alpine forests, pristine ponds, soaring cliffs—campers will spend their days climbing and their nights camping under the stars.

In a group of no more than 13 campers and three experienced staffers (including at least one American Mountain Guides Association single pitch instructor), climbers will explore a range of Staunton’s engaging, challenging routes. They’ll break into small climbing teams to get comfortable with their equipment, practice climbing and bouldering techniques and try out different roles within their team. They’ll also build camping skills as they learn the basics of cooking and sleeping outdoors—and take a day away from climbing to raft through Clear Creek Canyon.

It’s a week of authentic adventure at its best, one that leaves campers with solid skills, lasting friendships and a renewed appreciation for being active outdoors.

* While beginning rock climbers are welcome, participants must have some experience with climbing basics and should be excited to spend 4-6 hours rock climbing each day. Campers will likely be divided up by experience level during climbs.

The Week's Adventures

Climbing & Bouldering Technique

Campers will take on a range of rock types, styles and levels of difficulty in stunning natural settings as they explore Staunton’s knobs, domes and cliffs for an exciting 4-6 hours per day.  They will get familiar with carabiners, stoppers, camalots and belay devices, practicing with their climbing equipment as they review traditional gear placement, advance their knot knowledge, identify natural anchors and set up new ones.  Campers will learn new techniques like flagging a big move, smearing a slab, mastering a crack and heel hooking an arête.

On rafting day, we work with a local licensed raft company to take campers for a trip through nearby Clear Creek Canyon. On their rafts, they’ll practice working together and paddling through rapids.

Campers are responsible for their campsite home base, setting up and storing their gear and supplies as they eat, sleep and adventure outdoors. They’ll also take turns planning and cooking meals on a camping stove to feed the rest of the group.

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.
