Adventure Above and Beyond
5th – 6th Grade Expedition Rock Climbing Camp

5th – 6th Grade Expedition Rock Climbing Camp

Designed for 5th – 6th graders with climbing experience* who are eager for more, our weeklong camp lets kids build skills and confidence on a range of routes as they climb every day and camp every night. They’ll spend the week in Colorado’s Staunton State Park, exploring its meadows, alpine forests and pristine ponds—and of course, its rocky outcroppings and soaring granite cliffs.

The expedition group of up to 13 campers and three experienced staffers (including at least one American Mountain Guides Association single pitch instructor) will break into smaller climbing teams to tackle dozens of routes, negotiating featured formations, practicing climbing and bouldering techniques and getting comfortable with various equipment and roles within their team. They’ll also refine their camping skills as they pitch tents and make meals on camping stoves, plus take a day off of climbing to try their hands at white water rafting.

After a week of belaying, climbing, camping and rafting in some of Colorado’s most stunning spots, expedition rock climbing campers come away with solid new technical skills, deep reserves of patience and poise and a lasting love of authentic adventure.

* While beginning rock climbers are welcome, participants must have some experience with climbing basics and should be excited to spend 4-6 hours rock climbing each day. Campers will likely be divided up by experience level during climbs.

White Water Rafting

Great climbing opportunities abound on Staunton’s granite knobs, domes and cliffs, where campers will take on a range of rock types, styles and levels of difficulty in gorgeous natural settings for up to six hours each day.

Campers will get comfortable with their climbing equipment—carabiners, stoppers, camalots and belay devices—as they practice anchor setup, review traditional gear placement, identify natural anchors and advance their knot knowledge.

We partner with licensed rafting companies for one day of the session, when campers break from climbing for a rafting trip through Clear Creek Canyon. On the river, they’ll practice paddling through small rapids and work together to navigate their raft.

As they interact with their expedition-mates during the week—playing games, hanging out during downtime—campers will practice important interpersonal skills like communication, problem solving and teamwork.

At their campsite away from home, campers will master the basics of cooking and sleeping outdoors, learning how to set up and store their gear and supplies to keep things clean, cozy and efficient. They’ll also take turns cooking meals on camping stoves for their fellow hungry climbers.

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.
