Biking in the Backcountry 5th - 6th Grade Expedition Mountain Biking Camp

5th – 6th Grade Expedition Mountain Biking Camp

Our weeklong expedition camp is designed for 5th – 6th graders with mountain biking experience* ready to build their skills and explore beautiful trails as they bike every day and camp under the stars every night. Their adventure home base is Curt Gowdy State Park in Wyoming, 24 miles west of Cheyenne and known for its gorgeous meadows, dramatic granite formations and miles and miles of bike trails.

In a group of no more than 13 campers and two experienced instructors, kids will take to their bikes to explore Curt Gowdy’s 50+ miles of dedicated mountain biking trails, plus 30+ miles more at nearby Happy Jack Recreation Area. They’ll hone their technical and trail riding skills and enjoy up to five hours of biking a day, plus learn bike maintenance and camping fundamentals. They’ll also spend one very fun day off the trail rafting the Cache la Poudre River.

After a week of epic biking and camping in authentic, awe-inspiring settings, expedition mountain biking campers come away transformed into skilled, self-assured trail shredders.

* Participants must have some experience biking on single-track dirt trails and uneven rocky terrain. Campers will likely be divided up by experience level during rides. We strongly encourage campers to bring their own fully tuned, well-fitted mountain bikes to increase their comfort level. If they don’t have a bike or bring one that isn’t trail-ready, they can rent from our fleet for a $50 fee.

Teambuilding

From trailheads within biking distance at Curt Gowdy or those just a van ride away at Happy Jack, campers will take on a range of single-track trails, practicing keeping momentum as they climb hills and maintaining safe speed over rugged terrain and downhill.

Campers will take their mountain biking to the next level with technical obstacles, off-camber trails, tabletop jumps and much more. They’ll assess environmental differences, employing a variety of biking techniques and body positions for each new landscape.

When they’re not riding, campers will learn the nuts and bolts of bike maintenance, solving derailleur tension issues, adjusting chain lengths and truing wheels to prepare for any challenge that might arise on their rides.

We partner with licensed rafting companies for one day of the session, giving campers a change of pace as they swap their pedals for paddles. On the nearby Cache la Poudre River, they’ll practice paddling through small rapids, staying safe on the water and working together with their fellow rafters to navigate their vessel.

Campers will get familiar with the equipment they need for cooking, cleaning and sleeping outdoors, learning how to set it all up, break it all down and keep their campsite clean and functional in the meantime. They’ll also take turns cooking hearty meals on camping stoves for a band of hungry bikers.

Throughout the week, campers will practice important interpersonal skills like communication, problem solving and teamwork. Through games during downtime, stories around the campfire and time alone reflecting, they’ll build confidence and comfort within the group and as an individual.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.

OUR APPROACH TO SAFETY
