Kayaking Camp: Rocking the Boat

Highlands Ranch – Kayaking Camp

Our Kayaking Day Camp gets campers out on both flat-water and whitewater, experiencing the joy of paddling independently and working and as a team to hone their kayaking skills. Under the guidance of our able instructors, campers will learn basic strokes, rescue techniques, river reading and water safety as they navigate some of the most spectacular lakes and waterways in Colorado’s Front Range.

Campers take on challenges tailored to their ability level, progressing as they build proficiency and comfort. We group them by grade—2nd – 4th graders join the Skills Camp, while 5th – 7th graders make up our Adventure Team—and give them plenty of individualized support as they develop confidence and deepen their technical skills, stroke by stroke.

Please note: Kayaking Day Camp campers should have some previous experience paddling in standing or moving water. In order to register for this program, campers MUST feel fully comfortable on open water and be comfortable being fully submerged in water for short periods of time. If a camper does not meet this minimum skill requirement, we reserve the right to move a camper to a different program (if space is available) or remove the camper from the group and offer a credit. If you have any questions about whether Kayaking Day Camp is right for your child, please give us a call at 800-977-9873.

THE WEEK’S ADVENTURES

Flat Water

Whitewater

Places We Go: Chatfield Reservoir

Campers spend their first two or three days mastering flat-water skills, getting comfortable with fitting their equipment, using kayaking hand signals, making wet exits and maneuvering our kid-friendly Jackson Whitewater Kayaks before they ever dip their paddles in moving water.

Places We Go: Clear Creek, South Platte

During the second half of the week, campers will leave flat-water behind to build knowledge and skills in moving water, practicing their technique in some of the Front Range’s premier bodies of water. Please note that our kayaking locations will depend on water levels and group ability.

Camp Director

Talia Baker

Talia has loved the outdoors ever since she was a kid– hiking, kayaking and exploring nearby farms in rural upstate New York. Her passion for teaching started early. By age 13, she was working at a 100-acre U-pick farm, educating students about local agriculture. After graduating from Cornell with a B.S. in agricultural education, she worked creating educational summer programs for local camps and children’s gardens.

She started at Avid4 Adventure as an instructor, honing her skills in mountain biking, rock climbing and canoeing, becoming certified in Wilderness First Aid and as a Wilderness First Responder. As the director of our Highlands Ranch camps, she loves helping kids get connected to the natural world and to each other. When she’s not at her day jobs as an Avid4 Adventure Camp Director or as a Distance Learning Coordinator at Respect Academy, you’ll find her hiking or playing rugby.

Why Sign Up For Multiple Weeks?

Do you remember that old TV show Blues Clues? It was the most successful kids show of all time. Do you remember that book that your child insisted on reading over and over again? How could you forget it. Why was Blues Clues so successful and why did your child NEED to re-read that book? Because repetition promotes learning, growth, and empowerment.

Based on our experience (and a bunch of brain science), we know that multiple weeks of Avid camp will benefit your child – it will result in greater skill development, increased self-confidence, higher levels of risk assessment/environmental awareness, and an improved ability to connect socially with others.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.

OUR APPROACH TO SAFETY
