Adventure Camp: Into the Great Outdoors

Highlands Ranch – Adventure Camp

Our Adventure Camp transports 2nd – 7th graders out to authentic local settings for thrilling, fulfilling outdoor experiences. Whether they’re returning or first-time campers, every day is a different adventure—mastering mountain biking, climbing a local crag, hiking a trail, paddling a canoe or kayak—and every challenge is calibrated to their age and ability.

Grouped by grade, campers build skills and confidence as they return to our program year after year. 2nd – 4th graders concentrate on getting comfortable with new activities, with plenty of support and inspiration from our staff and returning campers. Once they reach 5th – 7th grade, campers shift their focus to teamwork, mentorship and deepening their technical competence.

Led by the best outdoor instructors around, campers develop the know-how and lasting self-assuredness that propel them toward a lifetime of exciting and nourishing outdoor adventure.

Places We Go: Morrison Cliffs

We transport campers to nearby crags to learn the ins and outs of skillful scaling, including climbing techniques, equipment use and safety precautions.

Places We Go: Chatfield Reservoir

Our flat-water instruction program gives campers practice and confidence with paddling equipment and safety, getting them comfortable with the basics before taking on deeper skill building in both kayaks and canoes.

Places We Go: Waterton Canyon, South Valley, Meyer Ranch Park, Flying J Ranch

Whether they’re first-time bikers or regular riders, we get campers familiar with biking technique, safety and equipment (plus some bicycle maintenance basics) out on local trails. Campers can bring their own bikes or borrow from our fleet, which accommodates campers of any size.

Places We Go: Roxborough State Park, Glendale Open Space, Apex Park

Our hikes get campers out into nature and back to basics, teaching them about the flora and fauna they encounter and the principles of Leave No Trace as they explore and gain respect for the natural world.

MEET YOUR CAMP DIRECTOR

Talia Baker

Talia has loved the outdoors ever since she was a kid– hiking, kayaking and exploring nearby farms in rural upstate New York. Her passion for teaching started early. By age 13, she was working at a 100-acre U-pick farm, educating students about local agriculture. After graduating from Cornell with a B.S. in agricultural education, she worked creating educational summer programs for local camps and children’s gardens.

She started at Avid4 Adventure as an instructor, honing her skills in mountain biking, rock climbing and canoeing, becoming certified in Wilderness First Aid and as a Wilderness First Responder. As the director of our Highlands Ranch camps, she loves helping kids get connected to the natural world and to each other. When she’s not at her day jobs as an Avid4 Adventure Camp Director or as a Distance Learning Coordinator at Respect Academy, you’ll find her hiking or playing rugby.

Why Sign Up For Multiple Weeks?

Do you remember that old TV show Blues Clues? It was the most successful kids show of all time. Do you remember that book that your child insisted on reading over and over again? How could you forget it. Why was Blues Clues so successful and why did your child NEED to re-read that book? Because repetition promotes learning, growth, and empowerment.

Based on our experience (and a bunch of brain science), we know that multiple weeks of Avid camp will benefit your child – it will result in greater skill development, increased self-confidence, higher levels of risk assessment/environmental awareness, and an improved ability to connect socially with others.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.

OUR APPROACH TO SAFETY
