Kayaking Level II Camp: Moving Water

Golden – Kayaking Level II Camp

In our Kayaking Level II Day Camp campers will learn intermediate kayaking skills with a focus on moving water.  The first day will be on flat water to practice and review wet exits and rolls.  Days 2-5 campers will paddle on moving water independently and working as a team to hone kayaking skills. Under the guidance of our able instructors, campers will navigate some of the most spectacular lakes and waterways in Colorado’s Front Range.

Kayaking Camp Level II Prerequisites:

  • I have completed Avid4 Adventure’s Kayaking Single-Sport Camp.
  • I can paddle a kayak forward, backward, and in circles.
  • I know how to swim and would be comfortable “swimming” a section of rapids.
  • I can flip my kayak and perform a wet exit.
  • I can stop my kayak in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • I can turn my kayak to the left and right using appropriate strokes.

Please note: In order to register for this program, campers MUST be able to demonstrate the prerequisite skills listed above. If a camper does not meet these minimum skill requirements, we reserve the right to move a camper to a different program (if space is available) or remove the camper from the group and offer a credit. Although they’ll be wearing personal flotation devices (PFDs) at all times, campers should be competent swimmers and feel comfortable momentarily submerged under water. If you have any questions about whether Kayaking Level II Day Camp is right for your child, please give us a call at 800-977-9873.

Flat Water

Whitewater

Places We Go: Evergreen Lake, Chatfield Reservoir

Campers spend their first day reviewing flat-water skills, practicing wet exists, rolls, and rescue techniques.

Places We Go: Clear Creek, South Platte

During the other 4 days of the week, campers will leave flat-water behind to build upon their knowledge and skills in moving water, practicing in some of Front Range’s premier bodies of water. Please note that our kayaking locations will depend on water levels and group ability.

MEET YOUR CAMP DIRECTOR

Daniel Fluharty

Daniel started adventuring as a kid growing up in Arkansas and hasn’t stopped since. He took a job working at summer camps as soon as he was old enough, and became a caving, climbing and backpacking guide and a climbing and canyoneering instructor during his college years at Western Kentucky University and Metropolitan State University. After graduating with a degree in recreation management, he worked as a lead climbing and mountain biking guide at Apex Ex Adventure Trips.

A Wilderness First Responder and American Mountain Guides Association Single Pitch Climbing Instructor, Daniel spends as much time as he can mountain biking, rock climbing, splitboarding, backpacking and playing soccer. He loves working with kids in the outdoors, harnessing their natural spirit for exploration and guiding them in new and exciting adventures.

Why Sign Up For Multiple Weeks?

Do you remember that old TV show Blues Clues? It was the most successful kids show of all time. Do you remember that book that your child insisted on reading over and over again? How could you forget it. Why was Blues Clues so successful and why did your child NEED to re-read that book? Because repetition promotes learning, growth, and empowerment.

Based on our experience (and a bunch of brain science), we know that multiple weeks of Avid camp will benefit your child – it will result in greater skill development, increased self-confidence, higher levels of risk assessment/environmental awareness, and an improved ability to connect socially with others.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.

OUR APPROACH TO SAFETY
