Intro to Skateboarding: Boarding Basics

Golden – Intro to Skateboarding

Soon-to-be skateboarders learn the fundamentals—and experience the fun—of self-sufficient skating in our skill-building half-day camp. Led by an experienced instructor, boarding beginners will learn the basics of skateboarding and riding mechanics in a supportive, on-site environment.

Grouped by grade range—2nd – 4th graders in our Skills Camp, 5th – 7th graders on our Adventure Team—campers learn to skate with a 5:1 camper-to-staff ratio, giving them plenty of individualized support as they progress from one new skill to the next. They spend the week getting comfortable on their boards, learning about their equipment and gear and familiarizing themselves with skateboarding’s unique culture. By week’s end, they have the skills and self-assurance to take what they’ve learned to the local skate park.

Campers are welcome to bring their own gear, or they can borrow ours.

THE WEEK’S ADVENTURES

Skateboarding Skills

Safety and Equipment

Skating Etiquette

Campers get comfortable riding on both long and short boards, learning basic skills including balancing, riding transitions, carving and tic tacking. They’ll also learn some beginning tricks and put their skills to the test through various drills and courses.

We get campers familiar with the gear they need to ride—boards, pads, helmets—and give them some practice doing basic maintenance on their boards. They also learn the skateboarding rules of the road and how to fall safely.

Throughout the week, we introduce campers to the fundamentals of skateboarding culture, terminology and etiquette, so they’re comfortable joining the regulars at their local skate park.

MEET YOUR CAMP DIRECTOR

Daniel Fluharty

Daniel started adventuring as a kid growing up in Arkansas and hasn’t stopped since. He took a job working at summer camps as soon as he was old enough, and became a caving, climbing and backpacking guide and a climbing and canyoneering instructor during his college years at Western Kentucky University and Metropolitan State University. After graduating with a degree in recreation management, he worked as a lead climbing and mountain biking guide at Apex Ex Adventure Trips.

A Wilderness First Responder and American Mountain Guides Association Single Pitch Climbing Instructor, Daniel spends as much time as he can mountain biking, rock climbing, splitboarding, backpacking and playing soccer. He loves working with kids in the outdoors, harnessing their natural spirit for exploration and guiding them in new and exciting adventures.

Why Sign Up For Multiple Weeks?

Do you remember that old TV show Blues Clues? It was the most successful kids show of all time. Do you remember that book that your child insisted on reading over and over again? How could you forget it. Why was Blues Clues so successful and why did your child NEED to re-read that book? Because repetition promotes learning, growth, and empowerment.

Based on our experience (and a bunch of brain science), we know that multiple weeks of Avid camp will benefit your child – it will result in greater skill development, increased self-confidence, higher levels of risk assessment/environmental awareness, and an improved ability to connect socially with others.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.

OUR APPROACH TO SAFETY
