Adventure Camp: Into the Great Outdoors

Golden – Adventure Camp

Our Adventure Camp takes 2nd – 7th graders out to authentic local settings for confidence-building outdoor experiences. Whether they’re returning or first-time campers, every day is a different adventure—mastering mountain biking, climbing a local crag, hiking a trail, paddling a canoe or kayak—and every activity is leveled to their age and ability.

Grouped by grade range, 2nd – 4th graders concentrate on getting comfortable with new activities, with plenty of support and inspiration from our staff and returning campers. Once they are in our 5th – 7th grade group, campers shift their focus to teamwork, mentorship and broadening their technical skills.

Led by the best outdoor instructors in the industry, campers develop knowledge and lasting confidence and move toward a lifetime of exciting and fulfilling outdoor adventure.

THE WEEK’S ADVENTURES

Rock Climbing

Canoe & Kayak

Mountain Biking

Hiking

Places We Go: Clear Creek Canyon, North Table Mountain, Morrison Cliffs

We transport campers to nearby crags to learn the ins and outs of skillful scaling, including climbing techniques, equipment use and safety precautions.

Places We Go: Big Soda Lake, Bear Creek Lake Park, Arvada-Blunn Reservoir

Our flat-water instruction program gives campers practice and confidence with paddling equipment and safety, getting them comfortable with the basics before taking on deeper skill building in both kayaks and canoes.

Places We Go: Marshall Mesa, Three Sisters Park, Bear Creek Lake Park

Whether they’re first-time bikers or regular riders, we get campers familiar with biking technique, safety and equipment (plus some bicycle maintenance basics) out on local trails. Campers can bring their own bikes or borrow from our fleet, which accommodates campers of any size.

Places We Go: Corwina Park, Bergen Park

Our hikes get campers out into nature and back to basics teaching them about the flora and fauna they encounter and the principles of Leave No Trace as they explore and gain respect for the natural world.

MEET YOUR CAMP DIRECTOR

Daniel Fluharty

Daniel started adventuring as a kid growing up in Arkansas and hasn’t stopped since. He took a job working at summer camps as soon as he was old enough, and became a caving, climbing and backpacking guide and a climbing and canyoneering instructor during his college years at Western Kentucky University and Metropolitan State University. After graduating with a degree in recreation management, he worked as a lead climbing and mountain biking guide at Apex Ex Adventure Trips.

A Wilderness First Responder and American Mountain Guides Association Single Pitch Climbing Instructor, Daniel spends as much time as he can mountain biking, rock climbing, splitboarding, backpacking and playing soccer. He loves working with kids in the outdoors, harnessing their natural spirit for exploration and guiding them in new and exciting adventures.

Why Sign Up For Multiple Weeks?

Do you remember that old TV show Blues Clues? It was the most successful kids show of all time. Do you remember that book that your child insisted on reading over and over again? How could you forget it. Why was Blues Clues so successful and why did your child NEED to re-read that book? Because repetition promotes learning, growth, and empowerment.

Based on our experience (and a bunch of brain science), we know that multiple weeks of Avid camp will benefit your child – it will result in greater skill development, increased self-confidence, higher levels of risk assessment/environmental awareness, and an improved ability to connect socially with others.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.

OUR APPROACH TO SAFETY
