Rock Climbing Camp: Scaling the Heights

CASTLE ROCK – ROCK CLIMBING CAMP

Our Rock Climbing Day Camp gets campers climbing, scaling some of Castle Rock’s most iconic formations. With help from our top-notch instructors, campers learn the rock climbing ropes, mastering the basics of knot tying, belaying, rappelling and climbing as they conquer various routes and rock types.

Campers tackle activities designed just for them in teams grouped by grade—2nd – 4th graders in our Skills Camp, 5th – 7th graders on the Adventure Team—broadening their technical skills and taking on more challenging climbs as they gain comfort and competence.

While there are no prerequisite skills needed for our Rock Climbing Day Camp, campers will ideally have experienced climbing on a rock wall or in a climbing gym, and have a desire to learn more.

THE WEEK’S ADVENTURES

Climbing & Bouldering Technique

Equipment Practice

Authentic Climbing

Places We Go: Castlewood Canyon, Morrison Cliffs, and Clear Creek Canyon

Campers hone their climbing skills through bouldering practice, learning the ins and outs of climbing safety and ethics, climbing commands, proper spotting, hazard identification and footwork and body positioning techniques.

Campers get comfortable with their carabiners, stoppers, camalots and belay devices as they practice equipment setup, traditional gear placement, identifying natural anchors, tying knots and using their helmets and harnesses at local crags.

Places We Go: Castlewood Canyon, Morrison Cliffs, Alderfer/3 Sisters

Every day, we take campers out to climb at some of Boulder’s best crags, tackling a range of rock types, styles and levels of difficulty at world-renowned sites.

MEET YOUR CAMP DIRECTOR

Nichole Searle

Nichole loves the natural curiosity of kids and their excitement to be outside. Seeing the thrill in kids’ faces when they learn to bike, climb or paddle is one of her favorite rewards, so it’s no wonder she finds working at Avid4 Adventure to be one of the best jobs ever. When last year’s camp season ended, she kept the adventures continuing in her household by building a rock climbing wall in her living room for her kids and friends!

Nichole has a degree in Family Science from Brigham Young University. While in college, she studied abroad in Mexico City, in the jungles of Guatemala and Belize, on an island on the second largest barrier reef, and lived with locals in the Yucatán peninsula. That kicked off a wanderlust that spread to her family, and all 7 are now advanced scuba certified and enjoy exploring under the sea. In her professional life, Nichole has worked with kids and teens for over 20 years and still volunteers at a girls’ camp she attended as a child.

When she isn’t directing summer camp for Avid4 Adventure, or striking out on a new outdoor adventure with her family, you can find Nichole singing, designing stained glass, or tinkering with her car while listening to her favorite car repair podcasts.

Why Sign Up For Multiple Weeks?

Do you remember that old TV show Blue’s Clues? It was the most successful kids show of all time. Do you remember that book that your child insisted on reading over and over again? How could you forget it. Why was Blues Clue’s so successful and why did your child NEED to re-read that book? Because repetition promotes learning, growth, and empowerment.

Based on our experience (and a bunch of brain science), we know that multiple weeks of Avid camp will benefit your child – it will result in greater skill development, increased self-confidence, higher levels of risk assessment/environmental awareness, and an improved ability to connect socially with others.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.

OUR APPROACH TO SAFETY
