Castle Rock Camp: Into the Great Outdoors

Castle Rock – ADVENTURE CAMP

Our Castle Rock Adventure Camp transports 2nd – 7th graders out to authentic local settings for thrilling, fulfilling outdoor experiences. Whether they’re returning or first-time campers, every day is a different adventure—mastering mountain biking, hiking a trail, paddling a canoe or kayak—and every challenge is calibrated to their age and ability.

Grouped by grade, campers build skills and confidence as they return to our program year after year. 2nd – 4th grade kids concentrate on getting comfortable with new activities, with plenty of support and inspiration from our staff and returning campers. Once they reach 5th – 7th grade, campers shift their focus to teamwork, mentorship and deepening their technical competence.

Led by the best outdoor instructors around, campers develop the know-how and lasting self-assuredness that propel them toward a lifetime of exciting and nourishing outdoor adventure.

Mountain Biking

Hiking

Places We Go: Castlewood Canyon State Park

We transport campers to nearby crags to learn the ins and outs of skillful scaling, including climbing techniques, equipment use and safety precautions.

Places We Go: Chatfield State Park, Monument Lake and Rueter Hess Reservoir

A great introduction to kayaking & canoeing, our flat-water paddling program teaches campers proper strokes and rescue techniques in kayaks and canoes. In addition to gaining comfort in the water, campers will enjoy exploring local aquatic areas.

Places We Go: Hidden Mesa

Whether they’re first-time bikers or regular riders, we get campers familiar with biking technique, safety and equipment (plus some bicycle maintenance basics). Campers can bring their own bikes or borrow from our fleet, which accommodates campers of any size.

Places We Go: Spruce Mountain Open Space, Glendale Open Space, Columbine Open Space, and Gateway Mesa Open Space

Our hikes get campers out into nature in scenic places and back to basics teaching them about the flora and fauna they encounter and the principles of Leave No Trace as they explore and gain respect for the natural world.

MEET YOUR CAMP DIRECTOR

Nichole Searle

Nichole loves the natural curiosity of kids and their excitement to be outside. Seeing the thrill in kids’ faces when they learn to bike, climb or paddle is one of her favorite rewards, so it’s no wonder she finds working at Avid4 Adventure to be one of the best jobs ever. When last year’s camp season ended, she kept the adventures continuing in her household by building a rock climbing wall in her living room for her kids and friends!

Nichole has a degree in Family Science from Brigham Young University. While in college, she studied abroad in Mexico City, in the jungles of Guatemala and Belize, on an island on the second largest barrier reef, and lived with locals in the Yucatán peninsula. That kicked off a wanderlust that spread to her family, and all 7 are now advanced scuba certified and enjoy exploring under the sea. In her professional life, Nichole has worked with kids and teens for over 20 years and still volunteers at a girls’ camp she attended as a child.

When she isn’t directing summer camp for Avid4 Adventure, or striking out on a new outdoor adventure with her family, you can find Nichole singing, designing stained glass, or tinkering with her car while listening to her favorite car repair podcasts.

Why Sign Up For Multiple Weeks?

Do you remember that old TV show Blue’s Clues? It was the most successful kids show of all time. Do you remember that book that your child insisted on reading over and over again? How could you forget it. Why was Blues Clue’s so successful and why did your child NEED to re-read that book? Because repetition promotes learning, growth, and empowerment.

Based on our experience (and a bunch of brain science), we know that multiple weeks of Avid camp will benefit your child – it will result in greater skill development, increased self-confidence, higher levels of risk assessment/environmental awareness, and an improved ability to connect socially with others.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.

OUR APPROACH TO SAFETY
