Mountain Biking Camp: Bliss on Two Wheels

Oakland – Mountain Biking Camp

Campers experience the thrill of mastering mountain biking as they hit the trails in our Mountain Biking Day Camp. With help from our seasoned instructors, campers spend the week practicing mountain biking skills, learning bicycle maintenance basics and traversing the terrain of some of Oakland’s best parks and trails.

Our campers’ adventures are carefully customized so they progress as their comfort and skill level grow. We also group them by grade range—2nd – 4th graders in our Mountain Biking Skills Camp, 5th – 7th graders on the Mountain Biking Adventure Team—to be sure they’re in good company as they build confidence and further their mastery of mountain biking.

Please note: in order to register for this program, campers MUST be able to bike confidently without training wheels on a dirt surface. If a camper does not meet this minimum skill requirement, we reserve the right to move a camper to a different program (if space is available) or remove the camper from the group and offer a credit. While we strongly encourage campers to use their own bikes, we can provide bikes (and helmets) as needed.

There is a shuttle to/from Berkeley available. Details can be found here.

Trail Riding

Bike Maintenance

Places We Go: Joaquin Miller Park, Anthony Chabot Regional Park, Redwood Regional Park, Briones Regional Park

Campers learn how to properly fit a helmet and bike, practice basic bike commands and get comfortable with technical skills including bunny hops, track stands, braking and shifting, becoming more proficient riders as they take on incremental challenges.

Places We Go: Joaquin Miller Park, Anthony Chabot Regional Park, Redwood Regional Park, Briones Regional Park

We introduce campers to a range trails where they practice good trail etiquette as they learn to ride on rolling single and double track terrain, descending and ascending trail sections and narrow and winding trails.

When they’re not riding, campers get familiar with the nuts and bolts of bike maintenance, learning to safety check their bikes, solve gear problems and change flat tires.

Why Sign Up For Multiple Weeks?

Do you remember that old TV show Blues Clues? It was the most successful kids show of all time. Do you remember that book that your child insisted on reading over and over again? How could you forget it. Why was Blues Clues so successful and why did your child NEED to re-read that book? Because repetition promotes learning, growth, and empowerment.

Based on our experience (and a bunch of brain science), we know that multiple weeks of Avid camp will benefit your child – it will result in greater skill development, increased self-confidence, higher levels of risk assessment/environmental awareness, and an improved ability to connect socially with others.

WE TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.
