Discovery Camp: The Adventure Begins

Mill Valley – Discovery Camp

Three- and four-year-olds are ready. Ready for their first taste of outdoor adventure. Ready to experience our carefully balanced mix of adventure sports, outdoor education and creative pursuits.  In our Discovery Day Camp, with a camper to staff ratio of 5:1, preschool campers take on two adventure activities that provide a great foundation for leading an active life:  outdoor cooking and biking. There is also a post-lunch rest break where campers are encouraged to listen to a story, color, or relax in order to re-charge for the afternoon of activity.

In our cooking portion of the day, campers will learn what good nutrition means for their bodies and how to make smart eating choices. And of course, they cook delicious, nutritious dishes perfect for on-the-go trail snacks or overnight camping trip meals.

During the biking portion of each day, we work through a thoughtful progression from scooting to coasting to pedaling as campers gain experience on two wheels. Throughout the week, we’ll also engage campers in games, art, and yoga, offering additional opportunities for fun and confidence building.

Discovery campers are supported and inspired by the most qualified pre-K instructors in the business. The experience is a giant first step toward developing technical skills, confidence and a lifelong love of the outdoors.

Outdoor Cooking & Nutrition Education

Yoga, Art, & Music

From biking beginners to pros on wheels, we get campers familiar with biking technique, safety, equipment and maintenance, either on their own bikes or with one from our fleet (which can accommodate campers of any size). We also help training wheel riders graduate to two wheels.

Campers practice cutting, measuring and mixing as they prepare treats like fruity granola pancakes and no-bake trail cookies. They’ll focus on outdoor-ready foods, learning how to make trail snacks and other no-bake recipes for when they’re adventuring.

To round out the week, campers balance their adventure activities with creative pursuits including storytime yoga, art and music, learning about balance, self-expression and how to engage their bodies in new ways.

Zachary Hykan

I love to work with kids because they bring such high energy and passion for learning new activities and skills. It’s inspiring for me to see kids leap head first into a new thing, even when it’s hard or scary.

Why Sign Up For Multiple Weeks?

Do you remember that old TV show Blues Clues? It was the most successful kids show of all time. Do you remember that book that your child insisted on reading over and over again? How could you forget it. Why was Blues Clues so successful and why did your child NEED to re-read that book? Because repetition promotes learning, growth, and empowerment.

Based on our experience (and a bunch of brain science), we know that multiple weeks of Avid camp will benefit your child – it will result in greater skill development, increased self-confidence, higher levels of risk assessment/environmental awareness, and an improved ability to connect socially with others.

While no outdoor adventure is totally risk-free, we work hard to keep your kids safe. Every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved -- what they are, how to prevent them, how to respond if something goes wrong -- so kids learn how to approach challenges with intelligence and skill.
